Sometimes people print pages. I know I do. And when the designer has gone out his way to make an obnoxiously complex layout using the usual tables and graphics, it often spills off the page and becomes an unreadable mess. In short, what looks wicked on the screen often sucks on paper.

Wouldn’t it be cool to have a way to adjust your layout a little bit to accomodate for the limitations imposed by print? After all, print users deserve some respect too. Well, CSS offers you a way to accomplish this, and it’s actually pretty well supported, and hence a Good Idea.

Here’s a simple way to solve the “what font family to use” dilemma. With a type layer active, create a new action, and use the arrow keys to scroll through all the fonts in your type menu in the Options bar, then stop recording. Now any time you want to try different looks, run the action, and it will scroll through each typeface. For best results use the Actions palette pop-up menu to change the Playback options to Step by Step (with accelerated playback the fonts will change too fast to see the different looks).

For those of you who do not know the difference between an absolute and relative link, the following examples should make it clearer.

An absolute link defines a specific location of the Web file or document and can includ the protocol to use to get the document, the server to get it from, the directory it is located in, and the name of the document itself. Below is an example of an absolute link:

[code lang="html"]http://www.domain.com/pagename.html or /pagename.html[/code]

You will always need to use these for linking to other people’s pages. Be very careful to include “http://” in your link: e.g.

[code lang="html"]Design By Tim[/code]

If the browser does not see “http://” at the start of a link, it will think that it is a relative link and will look for the file in your site.

Spyware has become a prominent factor in using the internet. To keep your computer free from spyware and working well as well as to protect your private information it is necessary to install one or more spyware tools. Spyware can and will strike a computer system as soon as possible which means users must immediately install anti-spyware software upon connecting a computer to the internet. Some forms of spyware work fairly silent and do not have many adverse side effects while others have a mission to bombard to aggressively with pop ups email advertisements.

You computer should also have a secure firewall running, especially for users with a direct internet connection. Without a firewall your computer is open to threats including hackers, spyware, viruses and more. For Windows users it is advised you have the Service Pack 2 which has a built in firewall along with other vital updates. But in my opinion that’s only good for basic attacks, to be protected it is best that you use a hardware firewall (which can usually be found within a router solution).
